A 3-in-1 unit puts heat, light and an exhaust fan into a single ceiling fixture. One cut-out, one switch plate, one tidy install. If you're renovating an ensuite or main bathroom and don't want three separate fittings carving up the ceiling, this is the practical pick. It's also the standard call on most renos, which is why we stock them deep.
Our range covers Martec, Mercator and Brilliant, including lamp-heat models with 275W infrared globes, ceramic element units, and fan-forced options with tricolour LED panels. Below you'll find how the three heat types actually differ, a side-by-side comparison, sizing notes for your bathroom, and what your electrician will check on install.
The three types of 3-in-1 units (and which suits which bathroom)
Pick the heat type first. Everything else follows from that.
- Lamp-heat units. Two or four infrared globes (usually 275W each) that throw fast radiant heat straight down. You feel it the second they switch on, which is why they're the go-to for ensuites and smaller bathrooms where you only want warmth for the few minutes you're stepping out of the shower. Same tech as the classic IXL Tastic. If you've already got a separate exhaust sorted, browse the lamp-only options under heat lights.
- Ceramic element units. A heated ceramic core warms the air in the room. Slower to feel than lamp heat but steadier, and better for mid-size bathrooms where radiant heat alone won't reach the corners.
- Fan-forced units. A heating element with a fan pushing warm air through the room. These suit larger bathrooms and colder climates where you want the whole space warmed, not just the spot under the heater.
For lighting, most current models run a tricolour LED panel (cool white, warm white, daylight in one fitting). Older designs and some lamp-heat units use GU10 LED downlights or halogen. Slim-profile housings sit flush against the ceiling. Deeper housings give you more airflow but need more clearance above the joists.
Lamp heat vs ceramic vs fan-forced at a glance
| Feature | Lamp heat | Ceramic | Fan-forced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat source | 2 or 4 x 275W infrared globes | Ceramic element | Element with fan |
| Heat feel | Instant, radiant, directional | Steady, gradual | Warmed air, whole room |
| Extraction rate | ~200 m³/hr | ~300 m³/hr | 400+ m³/hr |
| Typical cut-out | 290 mm | 340 mm | Varies by model |
| Best for | Ensuites, small bathrooms | Mid-size family bathrooms | Large or cold bathrooms |
| Light | GU10 LED or tricolour LED | Tricolour LED panel | Tricolour LED panel |
Once you've narrowed the heat type, filter the products above by brand or finish to see what fits.
How to pick the right unit for your bathroom
A few practical checks before you order.
- Match airflow to room size. As a rough guide, ensuites and small bathrooms are fine on 200 m³/hr. Family bathrooms want 300 m³/hr or more. Bigger rooms or rooms that hold steam need fan-forced extraction.
- Check joist spacing. Most cut-outs sit between 290 and 340 mm. Measure the gap between your ceiling joists before you order. Shifting a joist is a different job entirely.
- Plan the duct run. The exhaust needs to vent outside, not into the ceiling cavity. Shorter, straighter duct runs move more air. Long runs with bends lose extraction.
- Switching. Most 3-in-1s need a 3-gang or 4-gang switch plate (heat, fan, light, and sometimes a separate light mode). Your sparky will confirm.
- Finish. White suits most ceilings. Black works for dark or feature ceilings. If ventilation isn't an issue and you only need warmth, radiant heating may be the better standalone option.
Installation, zones and what your electrician will check
3-in-1 units must be installed by a licensed electrician. There's no DIY path here. The unit is hardwired into mains and sits in a regulated wet-area zone.
Your sparky will check the unit against AS/NZS 3000, the Australian electrical wiring standard that sets out bathroom zones. Zone 1 is directly above the shower or bath. Zone 2 is the area immediately around it. Fittings in these zones need an IP44 rating or better, meaning they're protected against solid objects over 1 mm and water splashed from any direction.
They'll also confirm joist spacing against the cut-out, run ducting to an external vent (the BCA requires bathroom ventilation to discharge outside), and check the unit has a back-draft stop so cold air doesn't blow back in. Thermal overload protection, standard on the units we stock, cuts power if the element overheats.
What to check once a year
Pop the fascia and wipe the grille. Dust on the grille drops airflow fast. Check the heat lamps and replace any that have blown (always swap with the same wattage). Have a look up the duct run for lint or blockage, and confirm the back-draft flap still moves freely. If the fan is noisier than it was, that's usually the bearing or a duct issue, not the motor.
Why shop 3-in-1 units with Blue Leaf
We stock 3-in-1 units from Martec, Mercator and Brilliant, with full specs on every listing (airflow, cut-out, lamp wattage, IP rating, finish). All units meet Australian compliance standards for wet-area installation.
We're not a marketplace. We've picked the models we'd actually recommend, and the team knows the difference between a Profile Plus and a Contour without checking the box. If you're not sure which heat type suits your bathroom, ask us before you order.
Related bathroom heating and lighting
Looking at adjacent fittings? Heat lights suit bathrooms with existing exhaust. Radiant heating works for whole-room warmth without an overhead unit. Heated towel rails handle dry towels and take the edge off room temp. Bathroom lighting covers light-only ceiling and vanity fittings.
3-in-1 bathroom heater FAQs
A 3-in-1 combines heat, light and exhaust. A 4-in-1 adds a separate night light or a secondary light mode. Function-wise they're close. Pick on heat type and airflow first.
Yes, provided the unit is IP44 rated and installed to AS/NZS 3000 zone rules by a licensed electrician. Every unit we stock meets these requirements.
Match extraction to room size. 200 m³/hr for ensuites and small bathrooms, 300 m³/hr for mid-size, 400+ m³/hr for large or steam-heavy rooms.
No. It's hardwired into mains and sits in a regulated wet-area zone. A licensed electrician is required by law.
Yes. The BCA requires bathroom exhaust to vent externally, not into the roof cavity, where it causes moisture and mould damage.
IXL Tastic is the original lamp-heat design and the name most people search for. Martec and Mercator make equivalent and updated versions across lamp-heat, ceramic and fan-forced types, often at lower price points. For light-only ceiling fittings, see bathroom lighting.
