Installation Realities

Freestanding baths aren't technically hard to install, but they're not plug-and-play either. Plumbing needs to be in the right spot (or moved there), floors need to handle the weight (300-500kg when filled with water and a person), and waterproofing requirements still apply even though the bath isn't against walls.

According to HIA renovation data, bathroom projects that include freestanding bath installation typically add 2-3 days to the schedule compared to drop-in baths, mainly due to floor-mounted tap installation and additional waterproofing around the bath footprint.

The floor underneath needs waterproofing. Full stop. Even though the bath sits proud of the floor, water splashes, condensation forms, and you'll eventually have issues if the area isn't properly sealed. AS 3740 (Australian waterproofing standard) requires waterproofing in wet areas, and that includes around freestanding baths.

If you're retrofitting a freestanding bath into an existing bathroom, expect to pull up tiles, reroute plumbing, and potentially reinforce floor joists. Not impossible, just not the "2-day install" some retailers claim unless everything's already in place.
