Bathroom accessories sit separately from tapware and vanities. We're talking the wall-mounted and benchtop pieces that handle the day-to-day. What to check before you order

Four things trip people up more than anything else. What's behind the wall, whether finishes will actually match, mount type, and whether to buy as a set. Worth a minute on each.

Fixing and substrate. Most accessories screw into plasterboard with wall plugs. Anything load-bearing, like a fully loaded towel ladder or a grab rail, needs a timber noggin or stud behind it. Tile drilling needs a diamond bit and masking tape over the drill point. Set the drill to rotation only, no hammer.

Finish-matching across brands. "Brushed brass" from Parisi and "brushed brass" from Phoenix aren't always the same tone. PVD vs electroplated changes it too. If it's a feature wall, order one piece first and check it against your tapware in the actual light.

Wall-mounted vs freestanding. Renters and retrofits lean freestanding. Toilet roll stands, bath caddies, benchtop dispensers. New builds and reno work get the cleaner look from wall-mounted pieces planned at the framing stage.

Finishes that actually match

Finish is where most accessory orders go sideways. Short version. Pick your tapware finish first, then match accessories to that, not the other way round. Tapware ranges are narrower, so it's easier to find accessories that match a tap than the reverse.

PVD (physical vapour deposition, a hard-wearing coating bonded to the metal under vacuum) holds up better in wet areas than standard electroplating. It resists scratching and tarnishing on coloured finishes like matte black, gunmetal and brushed brass. Worth paying for if the bathroom sees daily use.

Brass-based accessories are heavier and generally outlast zinc alloy in humid environments. Matte black wipes clean with a soft cloth. No abrasives, no citrus cleaners. Chrome is the most forgiving and the easiest to source across brands. If you want full consistency across taps and accessories, start with your matching tapware finish and work outward.

Fitting and compliance notes

Most accessories are a straightforward DIY job. Mark, drill, plug, screw. Standard heights in Australian bathrooms run roughly 1100 to 1200mm for bath towel rails, 700 to 800mm for toilet roll holders, and 1600 to 1700mm for robe hooks. Adjust to suit the user. These aren't rules.

Grab rails are the exception

Grab rails need to comply with AS 1428.1, the Australian Standard for design for access and mobility. In practice that means the rail must be load-rated (1100N minimum), fixed into studs or solid blocking, and installed at the correct height and angle. A decorative towel rail is not a grab rail, even if it looks beefy. If the rail is there for safety, buy one that's certified and fix it properly. How do I match accessory finishes to my tapware?
Match to your tapware, not the other way around. Tapware ranges are smaller, so it's easier to find accessories that match a tap. Stick within one brand where you can, especially on coloured finishes like brushed brass and gunmetal where tones vary between manufacturers. If you're mixing brands, order one piece first and check it in your actual bathroom light before committing to the rest. PVD-coated finishes match more reliably than electroplated.

Can I install bathroom accessories myself, or do I need a tradie?
Most accessories are DIY. Towel rails, hooks, toilet roll holders, shelves and soap dishes all fix to the wall with plugs and screws. You need a drill, the right bit for your wall type (diamond for tile, masonry for brick, standard for plasterboard), and basic levelling. The exception is grab rails, which need to be installed into studs or solid blocking to meet AS 1428.1 load requirements. If you're not sure what's behind the wall, get a tradie.

What's the standard height to fit a towel rail or toilet roll holder?
Bath towel rails typically sit 1100 to 1200mm off the finished floor. Hand towel rails near the basin go around 900 to 1000mm. Toilet roll holders are usually 700 to 800mm off the floor and roughly 200 to 300mm in front of the pan. Robe hooks land 1600 to 1700mm up. These are Australian conventions, not rules. Is it cheaper to buy a bathroom accessories set or individual pieces?
Sets are usually cheaper per piece and guarantee finish consistency, which is the main reason to go that way. Individual is the right call if you already own pieces you're keeping, or you want one type from one brand and another from a different brand. For a full new build or reno, a matched set saves time and headaches. For a single replacement, just buy the piece. Don't buy a five-piece set for one broken hook.

How do I clean matte black and brushed finishes without damaging them?
Warm water and a soft microfibre cloth handle most of it. Skip abrasive scrubbers, bleach, citrus cleaners and anything acidic. All of those strip or stain coloured finishes over time. For brushed finishes, wipe in the direction of the grain. Dry after cleaning to prevent water spots, especially on chrome and gunmetal. If something's stuck on, use a mild dish soap diluted in water, not a degreaser. Treat matte black like it's painted, because the coating effectively is.

Do bathroom accessories need WaterMark or WELS certification?
Mostly no. WaterMark applies to plumbing fixtures that connect to the water supply (tapware, toilets, mixers). WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) covers products that use water, which decorative accessories don't. Towel rails, hooks, shelves, soap dishes and toilet roll holders don't need either. Wall-mounted soap dispensers that plumb into the wall would, but the standard bottle-style ones don't. Heated towel rails need electrical compliance (AS/NZS 3000) but not WaterMark. Grab rails need AS 1428.1 compliance for safety.
