Basin mixers, sorted properly {#intro}

A basin mixer is one tap, one lever, one spout. Hot and cold blended through a single cartridge. Most Aussie renos now spec mixers over the old two-tap setup because they're quicker to use, easier to clean around, and friendlier on the water bill once you pair them with a decent WELS rating.

The thing that trips people up isn't style. It's not finish either. It's height. A standard bench mixer that looks sharp next to an inset basin will spray water everywhere behind an above-counter vessel. Get the height right first. Then choose the look.

Which type fits your basin {#types}

Three layouts cover most situations, with a couple of choices inside each.

Single-lever mixers are by far the most common. Three-hole sets with twin handles still suit traditional and provincial styles, especially across the Abey range. Spout shape is the other call. Gooseneck spouts give more clearance for hand-washing. Straight spouts keep the look tight against a square basin.

If you're still picking the basin itself, sort that first. Matching the mixer to your basin shape is much easier than the other way around.

What to check before you order {#checks}

Four checks. Do these and the rest is taste.

• Spout reach vs basin width. Water should land in the bowl, not on the rim or the back wall. Aim for the spout outlet to sit roughly over the basin's drain.
• Spout height vs basin lip. You need clearance to wash hands comfortably. A vessel basin with a short standard mixer is the classic mistake.
• Cold start cartridge. Lever centred opens cold, not lukewarm. The hot water service doesn't fire for a quick rinse, which adds up over a year. Now standard on newer Fienza, Phoenix and Nero ranges.
• WELS stars and flow rate. Every 1 L/min you trim saves a household about 2,000 litres and $5.50 a year (waterrating.gov.au). A 6-star mixer at 4 L/min saves roughly 20 kL and $60 a year against an old 15 L/min tap.

Finish matters too. PVD coating holds up far better than electroplating against fingernails, rings and cleaning products. Inside the body, look for a ceramic disc cartridge. That's the part that fails first on cheap mixers.

Once those are sorted, filter the range by basin type and finish. You'll be down to a handful of options quickly.

Finishes that hold up {#finishes}

Chrome is still the workhorse. Easiest to match across showers, accessories and waste fittings, and it doesn't date.

Matte black hides fingerprints better than most expect, but only if it's PVD-coated. Electroplated black scratches at the lever pivot within a year or two.

Brushed nickel and brushed gunmetal sit warmer than chrome and hide water spots well in hard-water areas. Brushed gold and champagne are statement finishes. Check finish consistency across the basin mixer, shower set and accessories before you commit, because tones drift between brands.

PVD across every piece is the safest call if you're mixing fittings from different ranges. Nero's matte black and PVD finish range is a useful reference point.

Installation and compliance, briefly {#install}

What your plumber needs to know

Basin mixers must be installed by a licensed plumber under AS/NZS 3500. Not a DIY job. DIY installation usually voids the warranty as well.

Two certifications matter. WaterMark is mandatory for plumbing fixtures in Australia, certified against AS/NZS 3718:2021 for tapware (ABCB WaterMark Schedule of Products 2026-1). WELS registration and labelling is required by law for any tap supplied here (WELS Determination 2013, Compilation No. 3, in force 21 February 2025).

From 1 May 2026, only lead-free plumbing products, meaning a weighted average lead content of 0.25% or less, are authorised for drinking-water systems (ABCB). Every mixer we list meets that.

Recommended operating pressure is 150–500 kPa per AS 3500. If your mains pressure runs higher, your plumber will fit a pressure-limiting valve. Wall-mounted mixers need the rough-in set during wall framing or tiling, so decide early if you're going that way. Same logic applies if you're matching shower and bath taps installed at the same time.

Basin mixer FAQs {#faqs}

What's the difference between a tall and a standard basin mixer? Height, and what basin it suits. Standard mixers sit around 80–130mm at the spout and work with inset or semi-inset basins. Tall mixers run 200–300mm and are made for above-counter or vessel basins that sit proud of the bench. Putting a standard mixer behind a vessel basin is the most common ordering mistake we see.

Will any basin mixer fit my basin? Most single-hole basins take a standard 35mm tap hole, but check two things. The hole diameter and the basin's deck thickness. Some thinner stone or ceramic basins need a shorter threaded body. If you're unsure, send us the basin model and we'll check before you order.

What is a cold start basin mixer and is it worth it? With the lever centred, the tap opens on cold only. You have to push left for hot. It stops the hot water service firing every time you rinse your hands, which cuts gas or electricity use across the year. Worth it, especially for ensuites and powder rooms that see lots of short uses.

Are matte black and brushed finishes durable? Yes, if they're PVD-coated. PVD (physical vapour deposition) bonds the colour to the brass at a molecular level and resists scratching and cleaning chemicals far better than electroplated finishes. Check the product spec. What WELS star rating should I look for? Four stars or better for a good balance of feel and efficiency. Six-star mixers run at 4 L/min and save around 20 kL and $60 a year per household against an old 15 L/min tap (waterrating.gov.au). If pressure feels light at 4 L/min, a 5-star at 6 L/min is the next step up.
