Bathroom LED Mirrors

Strip the marketing off and an LED bathroom mirror is a mirror with low-voltage lighting built into the glass or frame, a touch sensor on the front and a power feed at the back. The lighting comes in one of three formats. Backlit throws a soft halo behind the glass for ambient feel. Frontlit puts light through etched bands on the face for shadow-free task lighting at the basin. Combined units do both, often with a colour temperature switch (CCT) so you can flick between warm white and daylight.

What to check before you order

Four things matter more than the styling. Get these right and the rest is preference.

Size against the vanity. Rule of thumb, the mirror should sit 50 to 100mm narrower than the vanity top on each side. More guidance on matching the mirror width to your vanity is in that collection.

Lighting type. Backlit reads as feature lighting. Frontlit is the one you want for shaving and makeup. Combined gives you both at a higher price point.

Demister. Sounds gimmicky until you've stood in front of a fogged mirror at 6am. Worth it if your bathroom extraction is weak or the room runs cold.

Features. Touch sensor is standard. CCT colour switch, dimmer, Bluetooth and a 3x magnifying inset are the common extras. Pick what you'll actually use.

LED mirrors are electrical fittings in a wet area, so the rules matter.

Wet-area zones and IP ratings

Under AS/NZS 3000:2018 Zone 2, the area within 0.6m of a bath or shower screen entry needs accessories rated to at least IPX4. IP44 means the fitting is protected against solid objects over 1mm and water splashed from any direction. Most LED mirrors we stock carry an IP44 rating, which suits typical bathroom placement. The Argent Mondrian 1400, for example, is IP44 with a hardwired 12V DC 60W output.

Hardwired install, what your sparkie needs

Nearly all LED mirrors are hardwired, not plug-in. You'll need a licensed electrician to connect the supply behind the wall before the mirror mounts. Look for the Regulatory Compliance Mark on the product, which signals registration under EESS and ACMA. SAA Approvals is one of the recognised certifiers behind that mark. When to choose a shaving cabinet instead

Tight on storage? A shaving cabinet with built-in LED makes more sense than a mirror alone. You get the light, the demister and the storage in one hardwired unit. The trade-off is depth. Q1: Are LED bathroom mirrors safe for wet areas?
Yes, provided they carry an IP44 rating or better and are installed outside the immediate splash zones defined by AS/NZS 3000 Zone 2. That zone runs 0.6m from a bath or shower screen entry, where IPX4 is the minimum protection. Look for the RCM mark on the unit. That confirms it meets the Australian electrical safety scheme. Most reputable brands we stock, including Remer, Aulic, Parisi, Fienza and Argent, supply with RCM and IP44 as standard.

Q2: Do I need an electrician to install one?
Yes. Almost every LED mirror in the range is hardwired, meaning the 240V supply runs through the wall to a transformer at the back of the unit. That's licensed electrician work, not a DIY job. Your sparkie will want the rough-in location set before the mirror lands on site, so check the spec sheet for cable entry position. Some smaller mirrors come with a plug-in lead, but they're the exception.

Q3: How does the demister actually work?
A heating pad bonded to the back of the mirror raises the glass surface temperature by around 15 to 20°C, which clears the fog in one to two minutes. 240V demister pads typically run between 28W and 150W depending on mirror size. Cabinet-suitable 12V demisters sit lower, in the 15W to 48W range. The pad usually wires to the same switch as the LED, so the mirror is clear by the time you've finished showering.

Q4: What size mirror suits my vanity?
The mirror should sit 50 to 100mm narrower than the vanity top on each side. A 1200mm vanity pairs well with a mirror between 1000 and 1100mm wide. Going wider than the vanity tends to look top-heavy and can clash with wall lights or shaving cabinets either side. Height is more flexible, but aim to have the centre of the mirror sit at standing eye level for the tallest regular user.

Q5: Backlit or frontlit, which should I pick?
Frontlit if the mirror is the main light source at the basin, because the light comes through the face of the glass and removes shadows. Backlit if you've already got good downlights or wall lights and want the mirror as a feature. Combined units with a CCT switch give you both, which is the safer pick if you can't decide. For ensuites that double as makeup spots, frontlit or combined wins every time.

Q6: What's the warranty and return policy?
Warranty terms vary by brand, typically two to five years on the LED componentry and longer on the mirror itself. Returns on electrical goods need to be unopened and unwired.
