Freestanding baths sit away from walls and turn your bathroom into something closer to a hotel suite than a standard home setup. They need more floor space than built-in options, cost more to buy and install, and you can't hide pipes or storage underneath. But if you've got the room and budget, they're the statement piece that pulls a bathroom together. At Blue Leaf, we stock freestanding soaking tubs from compact 1400mm models through to 1800mm+ luxury designs across acrylic, stone resin, and cast iron materials.

Will a Freestanding Bath Actually Fit?

Standard freestanding baths run 1500-1700mm long and 700-800mm wide. Smaller soaking tubs start at 1400mm, whilst luxury models hit 1800mm+. But the bath dimensions are just the starting point.

You need clearance around the bath. Most designers recommend 300-500mm on at least two sides for access and cleaning. A Melbourne bathroom designer we work with puts it bluntly: "If you're squeezing between the bath and vanity sideways, you haven't got the space for freestanding."

Factor in your bath taps too. Floor-mounted mixers need plumbing run under the floor. Wall-mounted taps work if the bath sits near a wall, but you lose that full 360-degree freestanding look. The tap placement dictates where your bath can actually go, not just where it looks good on the plan.

Acrylic vs Stone Resin vs Cast Iron

Acrylic freestanding baths are the most common. Lightweight (40-60kg), retain heat well, scratch-resistant when properly maintained. Cost $800-$3,500 depending on size and finish. Easy to install because tradies can move them without a crane. Our acrylic bathtubs covers everything from basic white ovals to matte black statement pieces.

Stone resin (also called composite or solid surface) weighs more (80-120kg) but feels premium. Cool to touch initially, then holds heat longer than acrylic. Repairable if chipped. Cost $2,000-$6,000+. Popular in high-end renos where the bath is the bathroom's hero piece.

Cast iron clawfoot tubs are the classic option. Incredibly heavy (120-180kg), need reinforced floors in older homes, but they're virtually indestructible. A Brisbane plumber told us he's pulled 80-year-old cast iron baths out of demolitions and they're still perfect after a re-enamel. Cost $3,000-$8,000. Check out our clawfoot collection if you're after that heritage look.

Installation Realities

Freestanding baths aren't technically hard to install, but they're not plug-and-play either. Plumbing needs to be in the right spot (or moved there), floors need to handle the weight (300-500kg when filled with water and a person), and waterproofing requirements still apply even though the bath isn't against walls.

According to HIA renovation data, bathroom projects that include freestanding bath installation typically add 2-3 days to the schedule compared to drop-in baths, mainly due to floor-mounted tap installation and additional waterproofing around the bath footprint.

The floor underneath needs waterproofing. Full stop. Even though the bath sits proud of the floor, water splashes, condensation forms, and you'll eventually have issues if the area isn't properly sealed. AS 3740 (Australian waterproofing standard) requires waterproofing in wet areas, and that includes around freestanding baths.

If you're retrofitting a freestanding bath into an existing bathroom, expect to pull up tiles, reroute plumbing, and potentially reinforce floor joists. Not impossible, just not the "2-day install" some retailers claim unless everything's already in place.

Styles matter too. Oval and round baths suit contemporary bathrooms. Rectangular designs fit modern or minimalist aesthetics. Slipper baths (one raised end) work for deep soaking. Corner versions exist but you're probably better off with a dedicated corner bath if space is that tight.

FAQs

What's the smallest freestanding bath available?

Compact freestanding soaking tubs start at 1400mm long. Still need clearance around them though, so you're looking at a 2.5m + bathroom length minimum.

Do freestanding baths use more water than built-in baths?

Not necessarily. Bath capacity depends on internal volume, not whether it's freestanding or built-in. Most freestanding baths hold 200-300 litres, same as standard built-in models.

Can I install a freestanding bath on the second floor?

Yes, but check floor load capacity first. Cast iron baths (300-500kg when filled) may need reinforcement in older homes. Acrylic is usually fine.

What taps work with freestanding baths?

Floor-mounted mixers (plumbing under floor), wall-mounted mixers (bath near wall), or deck-mounted on the bath rim. Floor-mounted gives the cleanest look but costs more to install.

How much does freestanding bath installation cost?

Plumber costs $800-$2,500 depending on tap type, plumbing relocation, and floor prep. Add floor-mounted mixer ($400-$1,500) and waterproofing ($500-$1,200) if needed.

Are freestanding baths cold to sit against?

Acrylic stays warm. Stone resin and cast iron feel cold initially but hold heat longer once the bath fills. Some people prefer the solid feel, others find it uncomfortable.

Do I need a bigger hot water system for a freestanding bath?

Depends on bath capacity. Standard 250L hot water systems handle most baths fine. Large 300L+ baths might need upgrading or you'll run out of hot water mid-fill.
