Types of kitchen mixer taps

The decision starts here. Get the type right and the rest is mostly taste.

Gooseneck. High-arch spout with plenty of clearance for pots and tall jugs. Best in deep single bowls. Check the height if there's a window or overhead cabinet above the sink.

Pull-out. Short hose that pulls forward out of the spout for rinsing. Tidy in smaller kitchens and handy for washing fruit or filling buckets beside the sink.

Pull-down. Longer hose that pulls down into the bowl. Suits double sinks and bigger prep zones, with stronger rinse reach.

Standard fixed spout. No swivel, no pull. Simple, fewer parts, lower cost. Fine for a single bowl where you don't need to move the water around.

Swivel spout. Rotates left to right to cover both sides of a double bowl. If the tap sits in front of a window, check the swivel arc clears the frame when the window opens. It's a common install trap.

Filter-ready or 3-in-1. Separate line for filtered water through the same mixer body. Worth considering if you're planning an under-sink filter.

Finishes and how they behave near a sink

Finishes look the same in a showroom. They behave very differently above a busy sink.

Chrome is the easiest to live with. Hides water spots and wipes clean with almost anything.

Brushed nickel and brushed gold soften the look and disguise fingerprints better than polished finishes. Still need a wipe-down, just less obvious.

Matte black in a kitchen splashes and shows water spots more than people expect, especially around the spout base. Wipe it dry after washing up and it stays sharp. Skip abrasive cleaners.

Gun metal grey pairs well with stainless steel and concrete-look benchtops. Sits between chrome and matte black for upkeep.

PVD coating means physical vapour deposition, a hardened layer bonded over the finish. It resists scratching and tarnishing better than a standard plated finish, which matters in a busy kitchen.

Most kitchen sinks use a 35mm tap hole, the Australian standard. Measure yours before ordering, especially on older sinks. Check spout reach against your sink width so water lands in the bowl, not on the rim. Swivel taps in front of a window need the swivel arc checked against the open sash.

Keeping a kitchen mixer working

If your current tap drips when you turn it off, it's usually the cartridge, not the whole mixer. Ceramic disc cartridges are replaceable on most quality mixers.

Unscrew the aerator at the spout tip every few months and soak it in vinegar to clear limescale. The flow will come back. For finishes, soft cloth and warm soapy water only. Matte black especially hates anything abrasive.
