Bathroom mirrors that suit Australian bathrooms
A bathroom mirror isn't just a wall mirror moved into a wet room. The backing is built for humidity, and most quality options now use copper-free silvering, which resists the black edge spotting you get when steam works its way behind a cheaper mirror. That's the practical difference worth paying for.
Our range covers the main shapes and formats you'll see in Australian bathrooms. Framed and frameless rectangles, rounds, arches, pills, stadiums, LED backlit options, mirrors with a small shelf, and shaving cabinets when you need storage behind the glass. Brands stocked include ADP, Parisi, Fienza and Forme. Sizes run from 450mm round through to 1500mm wide.
Doing a full reno, a like-for-like replacement, or speccing for a client? The sections below walk through size, finish, safety glass and demisting in plain terms.
Mirror types and what each one's for
Here's the quick version. Pick the row that matches what your bathroom actually needs.
| Type | Key feature | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Framed | Defined border, ties to tapware finish | Traditional or transitional rooms |
| Frameless | Clean polished edge | Small bathrooms, minimalist look |
| Round / Arch | Soft shape, softens square joinery | Feature wall above a single vanity |
| LED / backlit | Integrated light, often with demister | Ensuites, low natural light |
| Mirror with shelf | Built-in ledge for everyday items | Powder rooms, kids' bathrooms |
| Shaving cabinet | Storage behind the mirror door | Family bathrooms tight on space |

How big should your bathroom mirror be?
Right, the sizing question. Match the mirror to the vanity width, or come in 50 to 100mm narrower on each side. That's the rule Cargo Vanities uses and it covers about 90% of standard installs. Australian vanity heights sit between 850 and 900mm, so the mirror bottom typically lands around 950 to 1100mm off the floor, with eye-level centring around 1500 to 1600mm.
Common stocked widths are 450, 600, 750, 900, 1200 and 1500mm. A 1200mm vanity pairs cleanly with a 1100mm or 1200mm mirror. Going wider than the vanity looks off and crowds the wall tiles or sconces either side.
For accessible bathrooms, AS 1428.1:2021 sets clear figures. The mirror above the basin must extend from no more than 900mm above finished floor level to at least 1850mm. No mirror can be less than 350mm wide. Match your mirror to your bathroom vanity first, then check height against these limits if accessibility applies.
What to check before you order
- Mounting orientation. Some shaped mirrors are vertical only. The ADP Arch, for example, can't be flipped horizontal. Check the product spec before you commit to a layout.
- Frame finish. Match the mirror frame to your tapware finish, matte black, brushed brass, gunmetal or chrome, rather than the cabinetry. Tapware reads first in the room.
- Copper-free backing. Standard in most quality bathroom mirrors now. It resists edge corrosion in wet areas. Worth confirming on cheaper imports.
- Safety glass. Vinyl-backed mirrors (4mm or 6mm) hold broken pieces in place if cracked. Laminated safety mirrors (6.76mm or 8.76mm) meet AS 2208 and AS 1288 Grade A, the standard for glass in human-impact areas.
Demister pads vs anti-fog coatings
These aren't the same thing, and the difference matters.
A demister pad is a heated element wired behind the mirror. It draws 28W to 150W and lifts the surface temperature 15 to 20°C so condensation never forms. Sizing matters too. A 1200x800mm mirror typically uses a 1024x524mm pad, like Radiant's RDM7040.
An anti-fog coating is chemical. It's hydrophilic, so condensation spreads into a thin film instead of beading into fog. Cheap, no wiring, but it wears off over time.
Pick the wired demister for a daily-use ensuite. A coating is fine for guest bathrooms or occasional steam.
Installation and compliance basics
Any mirror with integrated lighting or a demister needs a licensed electrician. Wet-area wiring falls under AS/NZS 3000, which sets the zone rules for electrical fittings near showers and basins. Don't DIY it, and don't let a handyman wire one in. The same rules apply to your bathroom lighting.
For mounting, find studs or use wall anchors rated above the mirror weight. Larger mirrors (1200mm and up) are heavier than they look once the backing and frame are factored in.
Glass safety is covered by AS 1288, referenced directly in the National Construction Code. In practice, that means Grade A safety glass in any spot where someone could realistically walk into it. Laminated bathroom mirrors tick that box.
Bathroom mirror FAQs
What size mirror suits a 900mm or 1200mm vanity?
Match the vanity width or go 50 to 100mm narrower each side. A 900mm vanity takes an 800 to 900mm mirror. A 1200mm vanity takes a 1100 to 1200mm mirror. Going wider than the vanity crowds wall sconces and looks unbalanced. If you want a statement piece, a tall frameless rectangle running closer to the ceiling reads better than an overwide one.
Do I need an electrician to install an LED mirror?
Yes. LED and demister mirrors are hardwired, and wet-area electrical work must comply with AS/NZS 3000 zone rules. A licensed electrician is non-negotiable. Most need the cable rough-in done before tiling, so plan it in early.
What's the difference between a demister pad and an anti-fog coating?
A demister pad is heated and wired, raising the mirror surface 15 to 20°C so fog never forms. An anti-fog coating is a chemical layer that spreads condensation into a thin film. Demisters are permanent and reliable. Coatings are cheap but degrade over time.
Does mirror shape actually matter?
Functionally, no. Visually, yes. Round and arch shapes soften the squareness of vanities and tiled walls. Rectangles give you more usable reflection for shaving or makeup. Pick on what the room needs.
Is a shaving cabinet better than a plain mirror?
If storage is tight, yes. Our shaving cabinets hide skincare, medications and electric toothbrushes behind the mirror door without adding visual clutter. If you've already got drawer storage in the vanity, a plain mirror keeps the room cleaner.
What's the mounting height for an accessible bathroom mirror?
Under AS 1428.1:2021, the mirror bottom edge sits no more than 900mm above finished floor level and the top extends to at least 1850mm. Minimum width is 350mm.
Delivery and returns?
We ship Australia-wide and offer 30-day returns on stocked mirrors. Larger and made-to-order items have specific freight handling. Check the product page.
Why buy your mirror from Blueleaf
We're a specialist bathroom retailer, not a marketplace. The range is curated around brands that hold up in Australian conditions: ADP, Parisi, Fienza and Forme. We ship Australia-wide, offer 30-day returns on stocked items, and run a by-appointment showroom at 5/9 Ladbroke St, Milperra NSW if you want to see finishes in person.
The team knows the compliance details that matter on a mirror order. AS 1428.1 heights, AS 1288 safety glass, demister sizing, and where copper-free backing actually earns its keep. Ask before you order if you're unsure. It's cheaper than returning the wrong size.
Pair your mirror with
Most mirror orders sit alongside two or three other items. Browse bathroom vanities to match width and finish, or LED bathroom mirrors if you want integrated lighting and a built-in demister. For storage behind the glass, see our shaving cabinets. Round it out with bathroom lighting for wet-area-rated sconces, and bathroom accessories in a matching finish so the room reads as one decision rather than five.
