How big should your bathroom mirror be?

Right, the sizing question. Match the mirror to the vanity width, or come in 50 to 100mm narrower on each side. That's the rule Cargo Vanities uses and it covers about 90% of standard installs. Australian vanity heights sit between 850 and 900mm, so the mirror bottom typically lands around 950 to 1100mm off the floor, with eye-level centring around 1500 to 1600mm.

Common stocked widths are 450, 600, 750, 900, 1200 and 1500mm. A 1200mm vanity pairs cleanly with a 1100mm or 1200mm mirror. Going wider than the vanity looks off and crowds the wall tiles or sconces either side.

For accessible bathrooms, AS 1428.1:2021 sets clear figures. The mirror above the basin must extend from no more than 900mm above finished floor level to at least 1850mm. No mirror can be less than 350mm wide. Match your mirror to your bathroom vanity first, then check height against these limits if accessibility applies.

What to check before you order

- Mounting orientation. Some shaped mirrors are vertical only. The ADP Arch, for example, can't be flipped horizontal. Check the product spec before you commit to a layout.
- Frame finish. Match the mirror frame to your tapware finish, matte black, brushed brass, gunmetal or chrome, rather than the cabinetry. Tapware reads first in the room.
- Copper-free backing. Standard in most quality bathroom mirrors now. It resists edge corrosion in wet areas. Worth confirming on cheaper imports.
- Safety glass. Vinyl-backed mirrors (4mm or 6mm) hold broken pieces in place if cracked. Laminated safety mirrors (6.76mm or 8.76mm) meet AS 2208 and AS 1288 Grade A, the standard for glass in human-impact areas.

Demister pads vs anti-fog coatings

These aren't the same thing, and the difference matters.

A demister pad is a heated element wired behind the mirror. It draws 28W to 150W and lifts the surface temperature 15 to 20°C so condensation never forms. Sizing matters too. A 1200x800mm mirror typically uses a 1024x524mm pad, like Radiant's RDM7040.

An anti-fog coating is chemical. It's hydrophilic, so condensation spreads into a thin film instead of beading into fog. Cheap, no wiring, but it wears off over time.

Pick the wired demister for a daily-use ensuite. A coating is fine for guest bathrooms or occasional steam.

Installation and compliance basics

Any mirror with integrated lighting or a demister needs a licensed electrician. Wet-area wiring falls under AS/NZS 3000, which sets the zone rules for electrical fittings near showers and basins. Don't DIY it, and don't let a handyman wire one in. The same rules apply to your bathroom lighting.

For mounting, find studs or use wall anchors rated above the mirror weight. Larger mirrors (1200mm and up) are heavier than they look once the backing and frame are factored in.

What's the difference between a demister pad and an anti-fog coating?
A demister pad is heated and wired, raising the mirror surface 15 to 20°C so fog never forms. An anti-fog coating is a chemical layer that spreads condensation into a thin film. Demisters are permanent and reliable. Coatings are cheap but degrade over time.

Does mirror shape actually matter?
