Rain shower heads, explained simply

A rain shower head is an overhead shower with a wider face, usually 200mm or more, that drops water straight down in a soft, even pattern. That's the difference from a standard shower rose, which sprays in a tighter cone with more force behind it.

The range here covers wall-mounted rain showers that swap onto a standard shower arm, plus full rain shower systems that pair an overhead with a handheld on a rail. Sizes start at 200mm round and square for ensuites, step up through 250mm options like the Fienza Starry, and run to 300mm heads like the Caroma Contura II for main bathrooms with taller ceilings.

It suits renovators upgrading a tired shower, new builds where the rough-in can be planned, and anyone replacing a head without changing the mixer. Still comparing styles? The broader shower heads range is a good starting point.

Rain shower vs regular shower head

Right, the honest version. Rain heads feel softer than a standard rose because the water falls rather than sprays. On mains pressure that's lovely. On a gravity-fed system it can feel underwhelming.

Feature Rain shower Standard shower
Spray pattern Wide, downward, soft Tighter cone, more force
Coverage 200-300mm face 100-150mm face
Pressure feel Best on mains pressure Works on low pressure
Flow rate Capped at 9 L/min Capped at 9 L/min

Both must meet the same Plumbing Code of Australia flow cap. If you want the fall of a rain head plus the practicality of a handheld for rinsing tiles and kids, look at a twin rail system with a diverter.

What to check before you order

Four things decide whether a rain shower works in your bathroom. Get these right and the rest is finish and budget.

Size. 200mm suits standard ensuites and average ceiling heights. 300mm gives fuller coverage but needs the room to breathe, and a ceiling tall enough that you're not standing in the head.

Water pressure. Rain heads need mains pressure to feel right. NSW BASIX flow testing covers both high-pressure (at or above 150 kPa) and low-pressure (under 150 kPa) conditions, and your fixture should be rated for what's actually at the wall. If you're on a gravity-fed tank, a pump may be needed. Otherwise a smaller head is the safer call.

Mounting. Wall arm is the simplest swap onto an existing 1/2 BSP inlet. Ceiling-mount needs cavity depth and rough-in planning before tiles go on.

Finish. Match the shower mixer and tapware. Chrome, brushed nickel, brushed brass, matte black, gunmetal and brushed bronze are all stocked across the range.

Size and coverage at a glance

Size Shape options Best suited to Example from range
200mm Round, square Ensuites, standard ceilings Caroma Urbane II 200mm
250mm Square Mid-size bathrooms Fienza Starry 250mm
300mm Round, square Main bathrooms, taller ceilings Caroma Contura II 300mm

Installation and compliance: what's required

Any plumbed connection needs a licensed plumber. That's the rule across every state.

Ceiling vs wall mount

A wall arm swap is straightforward. Ceiling-mount is a different job. You need accessible cavity depth and the rough-in set before the ceiling is lined and tiled. Plan it at framing stage, not after. For full rail-and-overhead setups, see shower systems with rough-in specs.

Every plumbed fixture must carry Watermark certification (the plumbing safety mark) and a WELS rating (the water efficiency star rating). The Plumbing Code of Australia caps shower flow at 9 litres per minute, which is a 3-star WELS rating. A 4-star head drops that to 7.5 L/min and must pass spray force and coverage tests under AS/NZS 6400:2016. NSW BASIX, the SA Residential Tenancies Regulations 2025 and WA Technical Guideline TG037 all converge on the same 9 L/min cap.

Worth knowing: the 2025 WELS Scheme Evaluation found 4 and 5-star shower models grew from around 5% to 20% of sales as buyers chose higher efficiency without losing performance.

Rain shower questions, answered

Are rain shower heads suitable for low water pressure?
Not always, and it's the honest answer most retailers skip. Rain heads rely on gravity and a wide face, so on a gravity-fed system (under 150 kPa) a 300mm head can feel like a drizzle. WELS flow-rate testing is done at both high and low pressure, and the installed fixture should be rated for the pressure available. If you're on tank pressure, either fit a pump, drop to a 200mm head, or stick with a standard rose.

What size rain shower head should I choose?
Match the size to the space and the ceiling height. 200mm works in most ensuites and standard 2.4m ceilings. 250mm is a sensible middle ground. 300mm suits main bathrooms, walk-in showers and taller ceilings where the water has room to fall properly. Going bigger than the room needs just means more water hitting the screen and the wall.

Can I install a rain shower head myself?
A direct swap onto an existing wall arm (1/2 BSP inlet) is mechanically simple, but any work on a plumbed fixture in Australia must be done by a licensed plumber to stay compliant and keep insurance valid. Ceiling-mounted installs definitely need a plumber, often during the rough-in stage before tiling.

Do rain shower heads use more water than regular ones?
No. Every compliant shower head sold in Australia is capped at 9 litres per minute under the Plumbing Code of Australia, whether it's a 100mm rose or a 300mm rain head. A 4-star WELS rain head actually uses less (7.5 L/min) while still passing spray force testing. The face is bigger, the flow is the same.

Ceiling-mounted vs wall-mounted: which is better?
Ceiling-mount gives a true vertical drop and looks cleaner, but it needs cavity access and planning before the ceiling goes up. Wall-mount on a shower arm is the simpler retrofit and works for most renovations where you're swapping a head without opening up the ceiling. Performance is similar. The decision is usually about install stage and budget, not water feel.

Can I get a rain shower with a handheld?
Yes. A rain shower system pairs the overhead with a handheld on a rail and a diverter at the mixer, so you can switch between them. Useful for rinsing the shower down, washing pets and helping kids. See the shower accessories range for handhelds and rails that match your finish.

Why buy with us

The rain shower range here is deliberately tight. Caroma Urbane II and Contura II, Fienza Starry and Lillian, in 200mm and 300mm, round and square, across the finishes most Australian bathrooms actually use.

Every shower head listed is WELS-rated and Watermark-certified, so it's legal to install anywhere in Australia. We dispatch nationwide and the team can answer the compliance and fit questions before you order. That saves the most expensive mistake, which is the wrong head turning up on install day.
