Shower and bath taps explained
Three setups get lumped together here, and picking the wrong one means re-cutting tiles or living with two taps where you wanted one. So let's sort it.
This collection covers shower-only mixers, shower/bath diverter mixers that feed both a bath spout and a showerhead from one control, and bath fillers (wall or floor-mounted) that often come with a handheld shower.
It suits anyone replacing a single mixer, planning a full reno, building new, or sourcing for a client. Brands stocked here include Phoenix, Caroma, Nero, Meir, Parisi and Abey. You'll see collections like Phoenix Vivid Slimline, Caroma Contura and Nero Mecca across most finishes: chrome, matte black, brushed nickel, brushed gold. The decision usually comes down to how many outlets you need to control from one wall plate, and whether your bath already has its own spout.
What to check before you order
Four things matter before you add anything to cart. Get these right and the rest is finish preference.
Configuration. A shower-only mixer controls one outlet. A diverter mixer switches flow between bath spout and shower. A floor or wall bath filler is its own beast, often with an integrated handheld.
Finish match. Matte black, brushed nickel, brushed gold and chrome aren't always identical across brands. Easiest path is sticking with one brand's collection for mixer, spout, showerhead and accessories.
WELS rating and flow rate. Stars map directly to litres per minute. A 3-star tap discharges over 7.5 up to 9 L/min. A 6-star tap sits between 1.1 and 4.5 L/min. Lower stars, more water.
Rough-in body vs trim kit. Meir wall mixers and Phoenix SwitchMix systems list the in-wall body and the visible trim kit as separate SKUs. Order only the trim and your plumber can't install it.
Which setup suits which bathroom
| Configuration | Typical use | Outlets controlled | Compliance and install notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall shower mixer | Shower only, or paired with separate bath spout | 1 | Standard WaterMark tapware, AS 3718:2021 |
| Shower/bath diverter mixer | Combined shower and bath over one bath | 2 (bath spout + shower) | Listed under WaterMark 2026 as diverter mixer |
| Wall bath spout + separate mixer | Bath with shower mounted elsewhere | 1 spout, mixer separate | Match spout projection to bath edge |
| Floor-mounted bath filler with handheld | Freestanding bath, no wall plumbing | 1 to 2 (filler + handheld) | Unrestricted-flow bath outlets are a Lead Free exception under WaterMark 2026 |
Installation and compliance basics
What the rules actually require
Right, the non-negotiables. All tapware in Australia must be installed by a licensed plumber and carry WaterMark certification, which means it's tested to AS 3718:2021 (the Australian Standard for tapware, covering sizes DN 6 to DN 50 up to 80°C continuous).
Under the National Construction Code 2022, Part B2, any tap or outlet feeding a shower or basin must be at least 3-star WELS rated and discharge no more than 9 L/min. The same Part B2 caps heated water at 45°C in higher-risk settings (aged care, childcare, healthcare) and 50°C everywhere else.
Bath fillers with unrestricted flow are treated as a Lead Free exception under the 2026 WaterMark Schedule, so they sit outside the 9 L/min cap. Worth knowing if you're after a quick-fill bath. For brand-specific warranty and rough-in detail, check the Phoenix tapware collection.
Shower and bath tap FAQs
What's the difference between a shower mixer and a shower/bath diverter mixer?
A shower mixer controls one outlet, usually the showerhead. A diverter mixer controls two. It switches flow between a bath spout and a showerhead from the same handle and plate. If your shower sits over the bath and you want one wall control for both, you need a diverter. If the bath has its own dedicated tap elsewhere, a shower-only mixer is simpler. See the broader bath tapware range for spout-and-mixer combinations.
Do I need a licensed plumber to install shower and bath taps in Australia?
Yes. All plumbing fixtures in Australia must be installed by a licensed plumber, and the tapware itself must be WaterMark certified to AS 3718:2021. Under NCC 2022 Part B2, the installed outlet has to be at least 3-star WELS rated and not exceed 9 L/min for shower and basin taps. DIY installation voids product warranties and can fail certification at sale of the property.
What WELS rating should I look for?
For taps, 3 stars means over 7.5 to 9 L/min, 4 stars is over 6 to 7.5, 5 stars is over 4.5 to 6, and 6 stars sits between 1.1 and 4.5 L/min. Replacing an old 15 L/min tap with a 3-star 9 L/min model saves around 11 kL and $33 a year. Step up to a 6-star and you save roughly 20 kL and $60 a year, based on Water Rating figures.
Can I mix finishes across mixer and showerhead?
You can, and plenty of bathrooms do it well (matte black mixer, chrome rail shower). The risk is shade drift between brands. Phoenix matte black isn't identical to Nero matte black under bathroom lighting. Safest is matching brand and collection across mixer, spout, showerhead and accessories. If you're mixing, order samples or stick to chrome as the second finish since it's the most consistent.
Why is the in-wall body sold separately from the trim kit?
Brands like Meir and Phoenix split the rough-in body (the part plumbed into the wall) from the trim kit (handle, plate, spout) so you can change finishes later without re-plumbing. It also lets builders install the body during framing and the trim near handover. Check the product page carefully. If it says "trim kit only" or "body sold separately," you need both parts to have a working mixer.
Filter by finish or brand above to narrow it down.
Why buy taps from Blue Leaf
We're a specialist bathroom retailer, not a marketplace. The team here knows the difference between a Phoenix SwitchMix body and a standard rough-in, can tell you which Meir trim kits need which body, and will flag WELS and WaterMark issues before you order rather than after.
Stocked brands include Phoenix, Caroma, Nero, Meir, Parisi and Abey, with shipping Australia-wide. Unsure whether a diverter mixer suits your bath layout, or whether a floor-mounted filler will reach your tub? Ask us before you order. That's the part that saves money.
Related collections worth a look
If you've landed here but only need a shower control, the shower mixers collection is the standalone option. For bath spouts and bath-only mixers, head to bath tapware. Matching a freestanding bath with a floor-mounted filler is covered in freestanding baths. Showerheads, rail kits and overhead roses sit in showers. For finish-matched towel rails, robe hooks and toilet roll holders, see bathroom accessories.
