Small Vanities 500mm–650mm
If you've got under 700mm of wall to play with, this is the range that fits. Small vanities from 500mm to 650mm wide suit ensuites, powder rooms, second bathrooms and tight main bathroom runs where a standard 750mm or 900mm unit just won't work. Whether you're after a 500mm vanity, a 600mm vanity or a 650mm vanity, this small bathroom vanity 500mm range is built for exactly that gap.
You'll find four common widths here: 500mm, 550mm, 600mm and 650mm, in both wall-hung and freestanding formats. Call it a compact vanity, a narrow vanity or a small vanity unit, the four widths cover most tight spots. Slimline depths around 360 to 420mm are available where the room is narrow as well as short. Whether you're doing a full reno or swapping out a tired old unit, these smaller sizes let you keep the basin, storage and floor clearance you actually need without crowding the space. Browse the full bathroom vanities range if you're comparing sizes side by side, or see the wider ensuite vanity range for other ensuite-friendly formats.
How to pick the right width and depth
Picking the right vanity for small bathroom spaces comes down to two numbers: width and depth. Measure the wall run first, then subtract clearance. Leave 50 to 100mm either side of the vanity where you can, especially next to a toilet, shower screen or return wall. Doors and drawers need room to open too, so factor in about 500mm of clear floor in front for a comfortable pull-out.
Standard depth sits around 460 to 500mm. Slimline depth is roughly 360 to 420mm, and it changes the basin options open to you (more on that below). A 500mm vanity beats a 600mm when the wall is genuinely tight or a door swings nearby. A 600mm vanity wins when you want twin drawers and a bit more benchtop. For more on measuring, see our guide to bathroom vanity dimensions.
Size guide at a glance
| Width | Typical depth | Best for | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500mm | 360 to 460mm | Powder rooms, very tight ensuites | Single door |
| 550mm | 400 to 460mm | Ensuites, powder rooms | Single door or door plus shelf |
| 600mm | 420 to 500mm | Ensuites, small main bathrooms | Twin drawer or door plus drawer |
| 650mm | 460 to 500mm | Small main bathrooms | Twin drawer, door plus drawer, or single door with more bench |
Wall-hung or freestanding for a small bathroom
Wall-hung wins on visible floor. It's easier to clean underneath and suits an ensuite vanity setup where every visual centimetre counts. Just know that it needs a solid fixing point. On a plasterboard stud wall you'll want a timber noggin or batten behind the sheet to carry the load. Freestanding units skip that step. The plinth hides the pipework and they sit straight on the floor.
Plumbing set-out matters here. An S-trap means the waste exits through the floor. A P-trap means it exits through the wall. Wall-hung units usually suit a P-trap. Freestanding units take either. Check what your existing plumbing is before you order, or plan the change with your plumber. See the wall hung vanities collection for the full mounted range in this size.
Doors, drawers and what actually fits
At 500 to 600mm, a single door gives you one deep cupboard. Good for a hairdryer, cleaning products and spare loo rolls stacked on a shelf. Twin drawers at 600mm often hold more than a 650mm single door, because you can sort things by drawer rather than losing them at the back of a cupboard.
Watch the trap cut-out though. It eats into the top drawer on most vanities, so a hairdryer might only fit in the lower one. Soft-close runners and hinges are standard on quality units.
Pairing the right basin and tap
Integrated tops give you a clean, one-piece look and work well on standard depths. On slimline depths around 360 to 420mm, an integrated basin can feel cramped, so above counter basins often work better. They sit on top of the bench and let you keep a shallow cabinet underneath.
Tapware follows the basin choice. Slimline tops sometimes come with no tap hole, which points you toward a wall-mounted mixer. A wall mixer also frees up bench space around the basin, which is worth doing on a 500mm or 550mm unit where every millimetre counts.
Brands in the 500 to 650mm range
You'll find a mix of Australian and international brands stocked in this size, including ADP, Fienza, Timberline and Parisi, alongside options in solid timber vanities. Everything we stock is Watermark certified, which is the regulator's approval for connection to Australian plumbing. It's not a nice-to-have. Without it, a plumber can't legally install the unit.
FAQs
500mm wide is about the practical minimum for a basin and any real storage. You can go smaller with a wall-hung basin and no cabinet, but you lose the cupboard underneath. For powder rooms and tight ensuites, 500mm is the sweet spot.
Not always. Slimline depths of 360 to 420mm are usually paired with a matching slimline top, or designed for an above-counter basin. A standard drop-in basin needs the deeper 460 to 500mm carcass to sit properly, so check the spec before you order.
Whichever matches your existing waste. S-trap exits through the floor, P-trap exits through the wall. Look at the current plumbing before you buy. Changing between the two means a plumber cutting into the floor or wall, which adds cost.
Yes, but you need a timber noggin or batten behind the plasterboard to carry the weight. Fixing straight into plasterboard alone won't hold. If the wall's already sheeted, your plumber or carpenter can open it up and add the backing before install. See more in our small bathroom designs guide.
Why buy from Blue Leaf
We're a specialist online bathroom retailer, not a marketplace. Every product in this range is chosen because it works, not because it fills a page.
Our team knows the difference between an S-trap and a P-trap before you order, what WELS star ratings actually mean for water use, and what Watermark certification requires for legal installation in Australia. If you're not sure whether a 550mm or 600mm suits your space, or whether slimline depth changes your basin options, ask us. We ship Australia-wide.
