What a wall hung toilet actually is

A wall hung toilet bolts onto an in-wall frame, with the cistern hidden inside the wall cavity. Nothing touches the floor. You see the pan and a flush plate. That's it.

The question we get most: how's it different from a wall-faced toilet? A wall-faced still sits on the floor with the cistern visible against the wall. A wall hung floats, and the cistern is concealed behind plasterboard or tile. Different install, different look, different cost.

They suit full renos, new builds, tight ensuites where every millimetre of floor counts, and anyone who wants the pan set higher than standard for comfort or accessibility. They're not a like-for-like swap for an existing close-coupled toilet.

What to check before you order

Most of the trouble with wall hung toilets happens before delivery, not after. Four things to confirm.

Wall cavity depth. You need a stud wall deep enough to hide the cistern. The Geberit Sigma8 with Duofix frame and the Caroma Invisi Series II both fit a standard 90 mm stud wall, so most new framing works without modification.

Frame load rating. Australian standards call for a 400 kg pan load rating. Geberit's Duofix frame is strength tested to 400 kg. Caroma tests its pans to 800 kg. Either way, the frame carries the weight, not the wall.

Cistern and pan compatibility. Buy them as a matched system. Mixing a pan from one brand with a frame from another usually ends badly. Pair through our in-wall cisterns collection so the spec lines up.

Rough-in and trap. Confirm whether your waste exits the floor (S-trap) or the wall (P-trap), and the exact rough-in height before ordering. Your plumber will know.

Wall hung, wall-faced or close-coupled

Wall hung sits at the top of the cost range once you factor in the frame and the plumber's time. If budget's the driver, close-coupled toilets do the same job for less.

WELS, Watermark and flush volume

Two acronyms worth knowing. WELS is the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme. The star rating tells you how much water the toilet uses on average. As of August 2025, a 4-star toilet uses 3.5 L or less on average, 5-star is 3.0 L or less, and 6-star is 2.5 L or less. Watermark is the certification that says the fixture is safe to plumb in. By law it's required before a licensed plumber can install it.

NCC 2022 sets the legal flush volumes for dual-flush toilets at either 6/3 L or 4.5/3 L. The Geberit Sigma8 wall-hung is WELS 4-star at 3.4 L average. Caroma's Invisi II runs 4.5/3 L and is adjustable to 6/3 L, also WELS 4-star.

Installation and what your plumber needs {#installation}

Plan it into the build, not the swap

Installing a wall hung toilet is a wet trade job. The frame bolts to the floor and to noggings in the stud wall, the cistern is plumbed in, then the wall is sheeted and tiled over the top. Straightforward when it's planned into a fit-out. Painful when it isn't.

If you're replacing an existing close-coupled toilet, the wall behind it usually isn't deep enough or framed for a cistern. So you're opening up the wall. Worth knowing before you commit.

Brands worth knowing {#brands}

What's the difference between wall-hung and wall-faced?
A wall hung toilet bolts to an in-wall frame with the cistern concealed inside the wall cavity, so the pan floats above the floor. A wall-faced toilet sits on the floor with the cistern visible against the wall. Wall hung gives you a cleaner look and easier floor cleaning. Wall-faced is cheaper and simpler to retrofit because you don't need to open the wall.

Can I retrofit a wall hung toilet into an existing bathroom?
Yes, but it's rarely a quick swap. The existing wall behind your toilet probably isn't deep enough or framed for a concealed cistern. So the wall needs to be opened up, framed out with noggings, the frame fixed, the cistern plumbed, then the wall re-sheeted and tiled. Most people do this as part of a full bathroom reno rather than as a standalone change.

What rough-in and cavity depth do I need?
You need a stud wall cavity of at least 90 mm to fit the cistern. Both Geberit Sigma8 and Caroma Invisi II work in a standard 90 mm stud wall. Rough-in depends on your waste outlet. Confirm with your plumber whether you're running S-trap (floor waste) or P-trap (wall waste), and the exact dimensions, before placing an order.

Are wall hung toilets harder to repair if the cistern fails?
Not really. The flush plate is also the service access. Pop the plate off and you can reach the inlet valve, flush valve and seals from the front of the wall without opening anything up. Geberit and Caroma both design their cisterns with serviceable components from this access point. Stick with a major brand and parts are easy to find years down the track.

How much weight can a wall hung toilet hold?
Australian standards call for a 400 kg pan load rating. Geberit Duofix frames are tested to 400 kg. Caroma tests its pans to 800 kg. The frame is bolted to the floor and to wall noggings, so the load goes into the structure, not the plasterboard. Installed correctly, it holds far more weight than anyone would reasonably put on it.

Do wall hung toilets save water?
They use the same flush volumes as any other Australian toilet because the cistern technology is the same. Both Geberit Sigma8 (3.4 L average) and Caroma Invisi II (4.5/3 L) are WELS 4-star. The water saving comes from the cistern spec and WELS rating, not from whether the toilet hangs off the wall.
