Frequently Asked Questions
What causes efflorescence?
Efflorescence is caused by water entering masonry. Water travels through the pores and dissolves soluble salts. In cement paste within concrete and mortar, the most problematic salt is known as 'free lime' (calcium hydroxide). This salt can then undergo carbonation, forming hard-to-remove deposits on surfaces.
Efflorescence can also result from atmospheric pollutants or natural salts in materials like clay or aggregate—commonly seen on face brickwork. Surface-applied sealers such as our Hydrophobic Sealer for Masonry can help prevent this.
How does Efflock prevent efflorescence?
Efflock creates a water-repellent molecular structure within the pores of concrete. While it still allows for the controlled release of moisture, it blocks the migration of salts to the surface, preventing efflorescence.
How far does 1 litre of Efflock go in a tiling job?
Efflock is designed to be diluted 1:100 and used as gauging water in tile beds, adhesive, and grout. It’s highly economical and replaces the need for secondary waterproofing membranes.
- 1 litre bottle – approx. 16m² (includes 40mm tile bed, adhesive & grout)
- 5 litre bottle – approx. 80m²
- 20 litre drum – approx. 320m²
How long does Efflock take to cure?
Efflock cures in line with the cement hydration process. Avoid applying during inclement weather for the first 24 hours after use.
Does Efflock affect adhesion?
No, Efflock does not change the appearance of materials or interfere with the bonding of adhesives, coatings, or other finishes.
What sizes are available?
Efflock comes in 1 litre, 5 litre, and 20 litre containers. Each litre dilutes 100 times, making it cost-effective, lightweight, and environmentally friendly due to reduced packaging.
Can Efflock remove efflorescence?
Efflock is designed for prevention, not removal. While we don’t currently offer a remover, many products exist on the market. Efflock may still be used as a sealer to help reduce the recurrence of efflorescence. More information is available on our Technical Data Sheet.
