Bidet Spray vs Bidet Seat Australia: Which Should You Buy?

You want to add a bidet wash without replacing a perfectly good toilet. A handheld spray looks simple and affordable. A bidet seat looks tidier, but the prices and features vary considerably.

The choice becomes clearer when you separate three options: a handheld spray, a non-electric bidet seat and an electronic seat. They feel different to use, need different checks and can produce very different installation quotes.

At Blue Leaf Bathware & Tiles, you can compare all three. This guide focuses on upgrading an existing toilet. If you are still exploring the wider category, our guide to bidet types introduces the other formats.

Bidet spray vs bidet seat: quick comparison

Consideration Handheld spray Non-electric seat Electronic seat
Wash control Hold and aim a trigger-operated handpiece Built-in nozzle with manual control Built-in nozzle with electronic controls
Electricity No, for a basic spray No Yes
Warm water Depends on the model and supplied water; the spray does not heat it Do not assume a heating function Available on selected models
Drying No built-in dryer No powered dryer Available on selected models
Main fit check Reach, holder position and hose storage Pan shape, mountings, control and inlet clearance Pan fit, rear housing, water and power
Backflow protection Must be included in the installation assessment Check the exact model and installation Check integral protection and local requirements

Start with how you want to use it

A handheld spray gives you direct control

You pick up the handpiece, position it and operate the trigger. Some people prefer that familiar control. Others find holding, aiming and returning the hose less convenient than using a seat-mounted nozzle.

Think through the whole movement while seated. Can you reach the holder, operate the trigger and return the handpiece comfortably? The position that looks neat on a showroom wall may not be the position that works beside your toilet.

A non-electric seat is the middle option

A non-electric bidet seat adds a wash nozzle and manual controls without needing a power outlet. It can suit someone who wants a built-in wash but does not need electronic comfort features.

For example, Lukka's Procida has front and rear wash functions, a soft-close lid and quick release. Choose the inlet version carefully and check its drawing against your pan. A non-electric seat still needs its water connection and backflow requirements checked.

An electronic seat adds model-specific comfort features

Electronic seats can offer adjustable wash settings, warm water and drying. Check each feature rather than treating every powered seat as the same package.

Caroma's Livewell 300070W includes remote control, front and rear washing, water-flow and temperature controls, and air-powered drying. Its value depends on whether those features matter to your household and whether the seat suits your existing pan.

Think about everyone who uses the bathroom

Picture a normal weekday morning. One person may be happy to pick up a spray; another may prefer a side control or remote. Decide whether the arrangement works for everyone before choosing a finish. Check the movements involved, including reaching the isolation control and returning the handpiece.

With a seat, consider the controls as well as the seat itself. A neat fit on the pan is only part of a useful upgrade. You also need a comfortable sitting position and controls you can operate without awkward stretching.

What do bidet sprays and seats cost at Blue Leaf?

These selected product prices were checked on 27 October 2026. They are individual examples in Australian dollars, with installation and delivery separate.

Compare the product first, then request the complete installation cost
Option Example and model Product price
Handheld spray Linkware stainless steel trigger spray, R460B A$96
Non-electric seat Lukka Procida, LK-PR03BD-L / LK-PR03BD-R A$198
Electronic seat Caroma Livewell, 300070W A$1,218

Prices and availability can change. These are not installed offers or market-wide minimum prices. Confirm the selected variant, supplied components and current price before ordering.

The cheapest product may not produce the lowest installed quote

The listed spray and non-electric seat are A$102 apart. That product-price difference does not account for the work needed in your bathroom. A spray can require additional valves, backflow protection and mounting work. A seat can require different plumbing, and an electronic model may need electrical work.

Ask for a quote covering the product, water connection, required backflow protection, installation, testing, any electrical work and making good. Also ask about ongoing inspection or testing obligations for the chosen device.

A useful comparison is two itemised quotes for two specific products. Avoid adding a generic toilet-replacement labour allowance to a bidet price; these jobs can involve different work.

Will it work with the toilet you already have?

For a spray, plan the reach and storage

Check where the holder and isolation control can sit, how the hose hangs, and whether it clashes with a door, vanity drawer or toilet roll holder. Keep the arrangement practical for everyone who will use it.

The existing cistern connection also needs checking. A convenient-looking water point is not automatically the correct supply for a bidet.

For a seat, compare the complete installation drawing

  • Pan shape and support: the seat needs to sit correctly on the ceramic.
  • Fixing positions: mounting holes and access must suit the supplied hardware.
  • Rear clearance: allow for the seat housing and the space near the cistern.
  • Controls and connections: check side clearance, inlet position and power requirements.

Use our toilet seat measurement guide to record the starting dimensions, then compare them with the bidet manufacturer's drawing. Matching length alone does not confirm compatibility.

Check whether the listing is a retrofit seat or a spare part for an existing bidet toilet. They are different purchases, even when both appear under “bidet seats”.

Australian installation checks: why NSW buyers should plan first

Backflow protection helps prevent contamination entering the water supply. Have an appropriately licensed plumber assess the exact product and installation before you order.

Handheld sprays in NSW

NSW's published advice requires handheld bidet hoses and trigger sprays to use drinking water and have individual high-hazard protection, such as a reduced pressure zone device (RPZD). An included non-return or dual-check valve should not be assumed to satisfy that requirement.

If the cistern uses rainwater or recycled water, point that out when obtaining the quote. The bidet supply must be assessed separately.

Seats with integral backflow protection

NSW advice recognises that some seats have suitable integral protection identified in the WaterMark product description. Others require a separate high-hazard device. The exact certification and installation matter.

Caroma specifies an integral air gap for Livewell but also advises checking whether an additional RPZ device is required locally. Do not assume that choosing an electronic seat removes the need for assessment.

Our WELS and WaterMark guide explains the different certification roles. Outside NSW, have your installer confirm the applicable state and local requirements too. For electronic models, arrange any new outlet or wiring through an appropriately licensed electrician.

Cleaning and daily care: choose a routine you will follow

A handheld spray adds a handpiece, hose and holder to clean. Follow the product instructions for isolating the water after use. The selected Linkware listing requires its supply to be turned off when it is not in use, so the control needs to be comfortably reachable.

A bidet seat adds hinges, nozzle areas and, on electronic models, a larger rear housing. A self-cleaning nozzle function does not replace the manufacturer's regular cleaning routine. Check which cleaners are suitable for the seat, controls and fittings.

If drying matters, try to understand the selected model's dryer controls and operation before paying for that feature. You may still choose to keep toilet paper nearby; a drying function does not establish how every person will prefer to finish.

Which option suits your bathroom?

Choose a spray when you prefer a handheld wash

You already like using a trigger spray, have a sensible place for the holder and can operate the controls comfortably. A spray is worth shortlisting once the plumber confirms a suitable installation and complete price.

Choose the finish after confirming the technical details. Matching brushed brass or stainless steel to your tapware can improve the look, but it does not change the required installation protection.

Choose a non-electric seat when you want a built-in wash without power

You want to keep the existing toilet, prefer a seat-mounted nozzle and do not need heated water or drying. A compatible non-electric model deserves consideration before you assume a bidet seat must be an expensive electronic purchase.

Check that its manual control is easy to reach in the finished room. An inlet option described as left or right does not, by itself, tell you everything about the control position.

Choose an electronic seat when comfort settings justify the extra spend

You want features such as controlled water temperature, remote operation or drying, and have confirmed the pan fit and services. Compare the settings you will use rather than buying the longest feature list.

If your pan cannot accept a suitable seat and you are considering replacing the whole suite, continue with our smart toilet versus bidet seat comparison. That is the separate replace-or-upgrade decision.

Before ordering, confirm these five details

  1. The complete model code and required inlet variant.
  2. The toilet drawing or dimensions used to confirm compatibility.
  3. The supplied fittings and any additional plumbing components.
  4. The backflow arrangement and any electrical work required.
  5. The complete installation quote and applicable product terms.

Bidet spray vs bidet seat: frequently asked questions

Is a bidet spray cheaper than a bidet seat?

The selected spray has the lowest product price in our table. That does not establish the lowest installed cost. Compare the plumbing, backflow protection and any electrical work for the exact options.

Do all bidet seats need electricity?

No. Non-electric seats use manual controls and do not need a power outlet. Electronic seats need an appropriate electrical supply for their powered functions.

Are handheld bidet sprays allowed in NSW?

They can be installed with the required protection and suitable drinking-water supply. Have a licensed plumber confirm the installation against NSW requirements before purchasing.

Does an electronic seat avoid an external backflow device?

Not automatically. Some seats have suitable integral protection, but the exact product certification and local requirements must be checked. Caroma also advises a local assessment for Livewell.

Can a basic handheld spray provide warm water?

The handpiece does not heat water. Warm-water use depends on the selected product and a suitable supply arrangement designed by the installer. Do not assume a connection beside the toilet provides warm water.

Will any bidet seat fit my toilet?

No. Pan shape, fixings, rear clearance and connection positions all matter. Compare the manufacturer's drawing with the actual pan before ordering.
